Jon Rath is my friend. There’s no denying that, he was the first friend I made when I moved to Madison. That being said, there’s also no denying the musical talent present in this young man. Couple that with some of the reasons we instantly became friends – his subtle humor, quirky nature, modesty, and all around kind demeanor – and you’ve got quite the musical artist on your hands. He’s one of the most musically knowledgeable people I know – not only about theory and sound design, but also in the breadth of his musical tastes. In the video above, I managed to capture him playing a song by one of his all time favorite bands, Radiohead. Though I often see him figuring out some tune we’re playing on his guitar or improvising along to a jam on his keyboard, he spends much of his time creating his own masterpieces in his bedroom studio. His own worst critic, most of these songs never see the light of day. Fortunately, he’s allowed me to post one of his songs on here for public listening. “Muholland Drive” exemplifies Jon’s affinity for the simple – the lyrics consist of “return” repeated over and over. However, he manages to make this one word take on so much meaning through the layers of instrumentation and the expression in his voice. The beauty is in the simplicity.
